Muslims in Maharashtra’s Pandharpur Defer Bakra Eid Goat Sacrifice to Honour Ekadashi
A heartwarming example of communal harmony has emerged from Pandharpur town in Maharashtra’s Solapur district, where members of the Muslim community have decided to postpone goat sacrifice on the occasion of Bakra Eid (Eid al-Adha) this year, as it coincides with Adhik Maas Ekadashi.
Pandharpur is one of Maharashtra’s most revered temple towns and is famous for the Lord Vitthal temple. During Adhik Maas Ekadashi, lakhs of Hindu devotees visit the town to offer prayers and seek blessings.
Keeping the religious sentiments of devotees in mind, the local Muslim community chose to defer the ritual sacrifice by a few days. Community members said the decision was taken voluntarily as a gesture of respect and brotherhood.
“We have been living in Pandharpur for years and have always been connected with the town’s religious and cultural traditions. To honour the sentiments of Lord Vitthal’s devotees, we decided not to carry out goat sacrifice on Ekadashi,” a member of the Muslim community said.
Adhik Maas Ekadashi is observed once every three years and holds deep religious significance in Hinduism. With both festivals falling on the same day this year, the Muslim community’s gesture has been widely appreciated as a symbol of mutual respect, peace, and unity.
Local residents and devotees have praised the move, calling it a powerful message of communal harmony and coexistence in a diverse society.
