Sonam Wangchuk shifted to hospital as Delhi Police ends 21st day of hunger strike amid High Court directions

Climate activist and education reform advocate Sonam Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital on Saturday after completing 21 days of an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi. The move came amid a heavy deployment of Delhi Police and followed directions from the Delhi High Court, which had expressed concern over his worsening health condition.

According to Delhi Police, Wangchuk was taken to the hospital on the advice of medical experts, who recommended immediate medical care due to the deterioration in his health after nearly three weeks of fasting. The police maintained that the action was carried out solely to ensure his safety and in compliance with the High Court's orders.

The operation triggered a brief commotion at the protest site as some supporters attempted to prevent police from moving Wangchuk. However, the police stated that officers exercised maximum restraint during the operation and completed the transfer safely without any major incident. Authorities also appealed to the remaining protesters at Jantar Mantar to vacate the site peacefully.

In a statement posted on X, Delhi Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar said Wangchuk had been shifted to the hospital for essential medical treatment in accordance with the High Court's directions and expert medical advice. He added that while some protesters tried to obstruct the police action, the situation was handled peacefully and with restraint.

Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike to press for his demands related to governance, examination reforms and accountability. His health had become a growing concern over the past several days, prompting judicial intervention to ensure he received necessary medical attention.

The latest development marks a significant turn in Wangchuk's protest, with the focus now shifting from the demonstration at Jantar Mantar to his medical treatment and the government's response to the issues he has raised.
