Russian Crude Oil Returns to India, but Without Discounts

India has resumed large-scale imports of crude oil from Russia, but this time the supplies are coming at higher prices, signaling a shift in the energy trade dynamics between the two countries. Earlier, Indian refiners had benefited from heavy discounts on Russian crude following the Russia–Ukraine War, which helped India significantly reduce its import costs.

Recent reports indicate that while Russian crude is again flowing steadily to Indian refineries, the earlier deep discounts have largely disappeared. The demand for Russian oil has increased globally, and logistical costs, insurance, and tighter supply conditions have pushed prices upward. As a result, Indian buyers are now paying closer to prevailing international market rates.

Despite the higher prices, India continues to import Russian crude due to its stable supply and compatibility with domestic refineries. Since the start of the Russia–Ukraine conflict, India emerged as one of the largest buyers of Russian oil, replacing several European markets that reduced their purchases.

Energy experts say India’s decision reflects a practical approach to energy security. Even with reduced discounts, Russian crude remains an important part of India’s diversified import strategy, helping the country maintain steady fuel supplies for its growing economy. The situation also highlights how global geopolitical tensions continue to reshape international oil trade patterns.
