ARA---------------------------The greatest strength of Indian democracy is its Parliament. It is the platform where the ruling party and the opposition debate critical national issues, demand answers from the government, and voice the concerns of the public. Consequently, every word spoken in Parliament extends beyond the day's proceedings to become part of the democratic culture. In this context, the language and choice of words used by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during the Lok Sabha discussion on a grave issue like the paper leak incident served to divert attention from the core matter.

The issue of paper leaks concerns the future of millions of the country's youth. The dreams of students—who have toiled for years to take an exam—are shattered when the fairness of the examination is called into question. It was only natural to expect a serious, fact-based, and solution-oriented discussion on such a topic in Parliament. It is both the constitutional right and the duty of the opposition to ask the government tough questions, criticize its policies, and ensure accountability. However, there is a clear line distinguishing criticism from unparliamentary language.

The ruling party raised strong objections to the words used by Rahul Gandhi in reference to Home Minister Amit Shah during the Lok Sabha proceedings. If a word is deemed inconsistent with parliamentary dignity, its use does not befit any Member of Parliament. The position of Leader of the Opposition entails not only political but also constitutional responsibility. One holding such a position is expected to articulate their views through facts and arguments, rather than using language that lowers the standard of the debate.

It is equally true that Parliament is an institution belonging to the entire nation, not just the government. The ruling party has a responsibility to answer the opposition's questions patiently, just as the opposition has a responsibility to keep its dissent within the bounds of decorum. Constant uproar, sloganeering, and personal allegations weaken democratic discourse. Ultimately, the greatest loss is borne by the youth whose issues deserve meaningful discussion.

Rahul Gandhi has long been raising issues such as youth concerns, employment, and paper leaks. Given this, there was a heightened expectation that he would advance the debate based on facts and concrete suggestions. Had there been any flaws in the law, he could have clearly highlighted them, proposed necessary amendments, and held the government accountable. Such an approach would have made his arguments more effective and strengthened democratic traditions.

In a democracy, power changes hands, but the dignity of Parliament remains constant. Those in the opposition today could be in power tomorrow, and those currently in power could find themselves in the opposition. Therefore, all parties must equally adhere to high standards of parliamentary language and conduct. While the public certainly expects spirited debate from its leaders...

The enactment of a stringent law regarding paper leaks is welcome; however, it is even more crucial that parliamentary debates reassure the nation's youth that their future is the subject of serious deliberation rather than mere political maneuvering. Whether it is Rahul Gandhi or leaders from the ruling party, everyone must remember that the sanctity of Parliament far outweighs any political gain. The true essence of democracy True power lies in the dignity of words, the strength of logic, and the civility of dialogue.
