PATNA-------------------------The nomination process for the Bihar MLC elections has concluded. Minister Deepak Prakash did not file his papers, putting his ministerial position in jeopardy. View the full list of the 10 candidates here.
The nomination process for 10 seats in the Bihar Legislative Council ended on Monday. With RJD leader Sunil Kumar Singh filing his papers on the final day, a total of 10 candidates filed nominations for the 10 seats. Once the withdrawal process concludes on June 11, the formal announcement of the unopposed election of all candidates will be made. Scrutiny of the nomination papers will take place on Tuesday.
The most talked-about figure in this election was Panchayati Raj Minister Deepak Prakash (son of Upendra Kushwaha), who did not file a nomination. According to the rules, any minister must become a member of either House of the State Legislature within six months of taking the oath of office. Deepak Prakash had taken the oath as a minister for the second time on May 7 without being a member of the House. His failure to file a nomination now makes it difficult for him to retain his ministerial post, as there appears to be no likelihood of a Legislative Council seat falling vacant in the next six months.
Who are the candidates for the 10 seats?
Of the 10 candidates who filed nominations this time, eight are new faces:
BJP: Sanjay Mayukh, Pawan Singh, Anil Kumar Thakur, and Sheila Pandit.
JD(U): Lalan Prasad (filling the seat vacated by Nitish Kumar), Nishant Kumar (Health Minister), Bharti Mehta, and Shivrani Devi.
LJP (R): Ashraf Ansari.
RJD: Sunil Kumar Singh.
An interesting aspect of this election is that while eight new faces have been given an opportunity, trust has once again been placed in two veteran leaders. Senior BJP leader Sanjay Mayukh has secured a chance to enter the Upper House for the third time, while RJD's Sunil Kumar Singh has secured it for the second time. All eyes are now on Upendra Kushwaha's next political move regarding how he handles this crisis.
